Semester 1 Blog

Semester 1 Final

Throughout the first semester of this class I have really stepped up to help out on the production side. Last year, I didn't really want anything to do with the production standpoint but this year I have really stepped up to help Blades and Nicole. I have learned to try new things in order to produce the show. I have edited 1 episode of Gameday and it was a lot easier than I thought. Another strength for me is coming to (almost) every single Football/soccer broadcast. Also, this year I tried something new by announcing the soccer game. Since I know a lot about soccer from playing it for so many years, it was a challenge for me to try this new thing.

On the other hand, during my golf season, I am really busy and its hard for me to cover regular events because of my own practices and tournaments. Although I don't cover many events during the fall season, I make up to it by coming to mostly all of the broadcasts. I wish I could have more time so that I could make up those events during my fall golf season, but unfortunately, golf makes it very tough. Another way I can make it up is by coming to all of the basketball broadcasts and filming some of the winter and spring events. It will be a challenge for me to balance this with golf, it always has been. I can improve myself in this class by making enough time and commitment to make myself better in this class.

My plan for this semester would be to improve my editing skills, production standpoint, and my anchoring skills. Learning how to ad-lib while looking at highlights is new and a good thing to try. it has been a challenge for all of us in this class. But I guess a start to my plan would be getting myself to do more in this class. I feel like I do a lot on the production side and coming to the broadcasts so something that I could do would be covering for a few more events. I also would like to see myself get better at learning new things and wanting to try new things. So, next semester, I could try to learn tricaster? Or maybe just learn how to use it. Anyway, my plan is to try new things next semester. Maybe we could try to do that on-call phone call with an athlete or player? Im not exactly sure how it would work but I think it would be something that we should try and learn from it!! I feel like I have really grown as a person while in this class. I have really come a long way from when I first walked in this class. I have become more of an open-minded person and have really grown into becoming a better person. This class has really helped me become a better editor, reporter, announcer, and everything else.

Weekly Blog 12/8/17

http://video.foxnews.com/v/5672568682001/?#sp=show-clips

In this story it talks about the California wildfires growing around the Southern Cal. area. The story has a phone call with a county fire officer answering questions. I think that this a good way to interview people in different ways. It also gives the story a variety instead of having the same thing every story. The wildfires may be contributing to give an outsider view of what it actually looks like.

Something that the Reporter could have done better is in the story they could have gotten a second outside interview to really grab the viewers attention and get another voice to talk about the story. The wildfires are a huge deal and to get a second interview in the scene of the fires or in California would be good to get a good idea of what's happening.

I think it would be cool if we had the option to do something like this. It would be really neat if we did something like this for ONW NOW or for SPORTS. If we were able to have a live show and make an on call interview during our show would be really good and would maybe give a second interview to give the whole story a good balance of variety in the story.

North Korea launches new Missile

In this story, it was more of a recap of how North Korea has launched a new missile that can reach the United States in just over 30 minutes of time. In this story it includes interviews of different analysts who were taking a look at how the missiles can get to the USA. The interviews were off of the Fox News Channel so the interviews aren't placed correctly like in the rule of thirds.

Something that this reporter could have done better is maybe try to get some insight from some type of North Korean. This is a huge deal for the US, so it would be really beneficial if there was insight from both sides of the story. A side from the US but also something for the North Koreans.

I can implement this into my gameday stories by just getting an insight from both sides of the story. Not just getting an insight from this side of the story. When doing a feature story for gameday the requirements were to get at least a minimum of 3 interviews, including 2 interviews of maybe 2 key players, and then an interview of the Coach and their insights and views of the past season.

Weekly Blog

This week in class I improved on learning new things in editing videos. I really didn't get a lot of chances to edit a ton of videos last year so getting the experience was a huge part of knowing how to edit but also repetition helps a lot. I have started to edit the gymnastics clips which has really gotten me to focus and edit more during class.

Boy caught on camera filling empty candy bowl with his own candy

In this article and story, it talks about how a young boy does an act of kindness by filling his own trick or treating candy into an empty left on its own bowl at a strangers doorstep. In this story the reporter does a really good job of telling a story. From beginning, middle, and end. Also has a very good light tone to the story. Makes the viewer feel like they are seeing something that is actually good in the world.

Something that the reporter could have done well was that they could have provided a little bit more of a backstory like maybe featuring the the boy and his family life. They also could have used more interviews from other people to get a better insight and feel of the story. it would have been cool if they would have got an interview with the young boy and ask him his thoughts about why he did this for the good of others!

A few ways that I would implement this in to my own reporting would be that I would try to find as many good heartwarming stories for the viewers to be pleased. I think that another thing that I could implement is that to make sure you have enough interviews on the story to give a full view from every aspect and angle of the story.

http://fox4kc.com/2017/09/25/dallas-cowboys-owner-jerry-jones-joins-team-to-kneel-before-anthem/

In this news story, the reporter did a very good job of telling the story about what exactly happened during the anthem. The Reporter mentioned how this has been an ongoing 'trend'. This movement that has been ongoing and has been a huge part of the news. This reporter showed this story very well, and did a good job.

One thing that the reporter is maybe missing is an inside scoop of things. The only image or video of the story is only on the cowboys. I think that this may give some perspective if they added other images or videos to the story to give the audience some other insight about this ongoing movement. I would have liked to see more perspective on the story as a whole.

I think that I could put this into some of my own stories by looking at other examples to see what perspectives they give to their stories. Personally I think that its a great idea to add new insight on a story. To see what the actual story has and give new perspective, views, and angles of the stories.

Semester 2 Final 2017- Junior Year Convergent Journalism

Convergence Journalism 2016-2017

Technology:

During my time of being in e-comm, I have learned a lot about the technology we use. Many things we use can be difficult and hard to understand. Some of the things we use are teleprompter, switcher, tricaster, and audio control. All of the tools we use make us use a great deal of concentration. If there is one thing I have learned from using this technology, it's working hard and paying attention to your surroundings. Not only do we use the broadcast equipment, but we also use cameras and tripods to film any event. If those pieces of equipment have meaning, they have showed me to come prepared and problem solve. And if you don't know, try to problem solve or ask for help. It has really taught me a lot this year in convergence.

Collaboration:

This year in convergence has really taught me to collaborate with others. A lot of the other kids in this class, I thought I would never be friends with, but having to work every week with them has been a blast. I look forward to coming to this class every single day, and working with many of my new friends. Collaborating with them was a little tough in the beginning, but as the year got closer and closer to the end, I have grown so much just because of the people in this class. Collaborating in this class was huge problem in this class, and we had issues with communicating in the production standpoint such as the script, credits, etc. But many of us learned from our mistakes and adapted to collaborating with the WHOLE class.

Communication:

Communication is very key when working with a big group of people. Everyone has to be on the same page, all at the same time. Many of us today in the real world still struggle with this. For example, during this year, many times while producing the show, we had slip ups of what was suppost to be in the script and what wasn't. One show, it took us many retries of running the show, then realizing something in the script was off. But, later in the year, we also had to problem solve, ask others for help or to help us understand what we had done wrong, and what we could do to fix it.

Project Management:

In this topic, it's very tough to manage your time, because a lot of times, you'll have a story that will be the day before the show airs. So we definitely had to focus and stay positive throughout this whole year managing our time. I had many situations this year, where I had to go out and film a sports event the day before it was going to have to be finished such as the link/project attached. And if it wasn't finished, or it wasn't good quality, it was kicked off the show. If you really want to work hard, I was taught to show that, show others that your work ethic is very very good. It will show up in many real life situations later on. Project management is all about how much your work ethic is, and how much you care about something.

Leadership:

Leadership plays a HUGE role in this specific strand of this program. Many of us in this class, have really stepped up and played a huge role in the class. The seniors we had in this class were very great leaders, and showed us how to really lead others, and to problem solve. i'd say the leadership is the most important thing. But, if there is too many leaders, it can clash. So what I will bring to next year's class will be a lot of leadership. Many of us Juniors this year have really grown as people and into strong leaders. I would have never thought, that in this class, I would play such a huge role. In the beginning of the year, I was shy, I didn't know a lot of people, and I wasn't really a big leader. But this class has taught me so much about being a leader, and stepping up to do the job. Many of us will take this when going into next year's class and will show the incoming juniors what it takes to lead others throughout this class and to be a leader in life itself.
